It's been a mixed day for brick-and-mortar retailers.
Black Friday traditionally kicks off the holiday shopping season. Except this year the starting gun sounded on Thanksgiving, when a number of big box retailers opened their doors that evening hoping to lure more shoppers with sales and promotions.
But results were somewhat mixed results. The National Retail Federation reported a nearly 3% decline in Thanksgiving weekend sales compared to last year, while ComScore said online sales rose 3%.
More data will be available as the week progresses. On Tuesday, ShopperTrak will release statistics for the entire Black Friday weekend.
Meanwhile, Barclays Capital analyst Matthew McClintock expects to get "a good read" on the teen category from both Aeropostale (ARO) and American Eagle (AEO) when they report results on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Meanwhile, November sales for Gap (GPS), L Brands (LB), and Costco Wholesale (COST) are slated to be released on Thursday.
As for today, many retail stocks sat in the red, including Urban Outfitters (URBN), which fell 3.5% to $37.65 and Aeropostale, which dropped 4.6% to $9.84. J.C. Penney (JCP) dropped 1.1% to $10.07 and Coach (COH) declined 2.3% to $56.64.
Those that bucked the trend, included, Best Buy (BBY), which rose 1.2% to $41 and lululemon athletica (LULU), which climbed 2.3% to $71.37.
